It wasn’t too long after the end of the Civil War. In 1856, Frederick Tudor, a chemist from London with interests in glues, perfumes and rubber articles, began experimenting with basic polymers. Eventually he created a number of useful compounds: a soluble gum (a latex), or rubber-like material (polymerized rubber); telopeptide – another polymer; and cellulose nitrate – another solid compound. 
From this early stage of experimentation several key steps occurred which would lead to the development of PVC \u2013 polychlorinated naphthalene (the initial term for PVC).
